Weather protection for critical offshore wind cable jointing
Ørsted required a reliable enclosure solution to support cable jointing works on the South Fork Wind project.
The works were carried out within a transition joint bay, an underground concrete structure where the offshore submarine export cable connects to the onshore cable network, transmitting power toward the converter station.
This is a critical stage in offshore wind infrastructure, where high-voltage cables are spliced and connected. The process requires strict environmental control, as moisture and contamination within the joint can compromise performance and create long-term reliability risks.
A sealed air enclosure configured around the joint bay
A Njordair SA-4 sealed air Fast Tent was deployed to fully enclose the transition joint bay and create a controlled working environment.
Three standard 5m modules were connected to form a continuous enclosure over the excavation, providing full coverage of the jointing area.
The sealed air structure delivered a stable, enclosed space that protected the works from rain, wind, and moisture ingress, which was critical for ensuring safe and reliable cable connections.
Its modular design allowed the tent to be configured precisely to the footprint of the joint bay, while the rapid deployment ensured the enclosure could be installed quickly as part of the construction programme.
A dry, controlled environment for high-voltage cable connections
The Njordair system enabled cable jointing works to be carried out in a dry and controlled environment, reducing the risk of moisture contamination and supporting the long-term reliability of the electrical connection.
The enclosure provided a practical and efficient alternative to traditional temporary structures, particularly in a constrained excavation environment where speed and flexibility were essential.
For renewable energy and utility infrastructure projects, Njordair systems provide a dependable solution for protecting critical operations where environmental control is essential.
