Weather protection for high-altitude drilling operations
Drilling operations in mining environments are typically exposed to some of the harshest working conditions.
At this high-altitude site in Chile, the drilling rig and crew were operating in:
• Strong winds
• Dust and debris
• Significant temperature variation between day and night
• Reduced air density impacting both people and equipment
These conditions not only affect worker comfort and safety but can also reduce operational efficiency and equipment reliability.
Traditional shelter solutions are often impractical around drilling rigs due to:
• Large, irregular equipment footprints
• Need for continuous access and movement
• Remote locations with limited infrastructure
A clear-span Fast Tent enclosure for complex machinery
Njordair supplied CA-12 Fast Tent modules to create a large, clear-span enclosure over the drilling rig.
The inflatable structure was installed directly around the operational equipment, forming a protected workspace without interfering with the drilling process.
The system allowed for:
• Rapid deployment in a remote environment
• Full enclosure of complex machinery
• Flexibility to work around the rig layout
• Minimal ground preparation
Despite the altitude, the constant air system maintained structural integrity and stability, providing a reliable enclosure in exposed conditions.
View Constant Air SystemsImproved continuity in demanding mining conditions
The Fast Tent system created a controlled working environment that allowed drilling operations to continue more consistently and efficiently.
Key benefits included:
• Reduced exposure to wind and dust
• Improved working conditions for personnel
• Protection of equipment and processes
• Increased operational continuity
This project demonstrates how inflatable modular structures can be adapted to demanding mining applications where traditional temporary works are difficult to implement.
